Chapter 19

“You’re doing so great!” said Daegal, sprinting across Studio B and reaching his arms out as if to hug Christelle. The cameras were switching positions so that each kitchen area was covered, and there was a minute or so until Christelle needed to be a host once more. But Daegal stopped just short of actually taking hold of Christelle, almost skidding on the shining studio floor.

“Makeup, hair, wardrobe...” he muttered, more to himself than to anyone else.

Christelle understood, even if it was a bit weird. She had to stay looking the same as she had looked just now for the continuity of the show to work, and any little changes like a crease in her blouse or a piece of hair out of place would be caught by the viewers who loved to pick apart TV shows in exactly that way.

Daegal’s teeth were on show again, and the wolfish grin had never gone away. “You’re a complete natural.”

“Really? You think so?” asked Christelle. She felt her cheeks turning red and she couldn’t help but be pleased with herself. She had been so worried about the whole thing, but now that it had started, she felt right at home. Her little catering business and her old life seemed very far away.

Christelle glanced behind Daegal to the bench where the judges were sitting. They were talking between themselves, looking over in her direction then going back to their conversation.

“Now, there’s just one thing I need you to work on,” said Daegal, and Christelle’s stomach flipped. Something that was wrong? Something that needed changing? Oh no, she thought she was doing great.

“Okay...”

“Don’t worry, it’s nothing major. But it’s important.”

Christelle didn’t like to say that that basically meant the same thing, so she let Daegal continue.

“It’s your rapport with the judges. The contestants already like you, they want to please you, but do the judges like you? Well, we’ve not had much of a chance to find out yet, and that’s partly my fault – we should have put you all together before now – but it’s also down to you to deal with, I’m afraid. Make them like you. Make them open up to you. Your job is to get their opinions, get some juicy soundbites, get something we can use in the show, you know? If they like you, they’ll be more willing to talk.”

“Sure,” said Christelle, “But I don’t know-”

“You’ll work it out,” said Daegal, brushing any concerns Christelle might have had to one side. “I know you will.” He looked up and made the thumbs up sign. “They’re ready for the first challenge.”

“How did you know?”

Daegal laughed. “I have amazing hearing. They say my name in the control booth over there, and I hear it. So, be careful what you’re saying about me, won’t you? I’ll be sure to know.” Coming from the charming Daegal, what might have been a threat from someone else sounded like a fun joke, although Christelle would definitely remember what he had said; she didn’t want to get caught out by saying something she shouldn’t.
